Certain people will have the ability to register 48 hours before we open registration to the whole world. This group will include:

  • Current elected board members

  • Current Advisor, which includes:

    • All three division Coordinators (Coed, Open, and Rec)

    • Webmaster

    • Corporate Attorney

    • Merchandise Coordinator

    • Advisors listed on the WUDi website

  • All previously elected board members

  • All captains from the past 3 summers (i.e. captains from all three divisions from WSL 2007, 2008, and 2009 get the early option for 2010)

  • Volunteers who help WUDi plan and run events, such as clinics, hat tourneys, etc. (these people will be determined by the elected board members)

Each Open captain may register with a CORE of players for his roster. Each CORE will have the following rules:

  • No more than 10 players

  • One player must act as a captain (send out emails, call subs, bring cones, and attend to all the regular captain duties)

  • The WUDi Board along with the Open Coordinator retain the ability to reject or modify a CORE

  • The CORE will count as the captain's draft picks for the first few rounds (number of rounds skipped = number of players in the CORE)

  • After all COREs have been submitted, the rosters will be completed at the draft

Veteran status will be maintained for WSL 2010 with the same policy as in previous years.

All people that have played from Co-ed, Open and/or Rec in a previous summer are considered "veterans." WSL 2010 will be the last year for Veteran status. As of WSL 2011, registration will be done on a first-come first-serve basis, with returning WUDi members and new WUDi members being treated the same. The only exception to this will be as listed in item #1 above.

I would like to be considered on of the chosen few to get early admission privilege. I have participated every year of summer league.
I hope there will be transparency to the "special" people are who get this priviledge, as decided by the board.
Who voted for me, who did not? What is the criteria used to judge?
How does this process work? Who gets to be judged? Are people nominated? Do we get to ask to be a part of this group? Are they just notified? How might these "special" people be treated by the board if there is an issue with them later? (oh they are special so they won't be in that situation). What happens the following year?
This smacks of favoritism, a country club attitude where "we only want those of you who meet our expectations" get the wink wink. Kinda like the process that has Dobyns not getting into the HoF yet again.
BTW I am shocked that there were 4(was it that many, I'll check again) folks who feel like he does not deserve to get in. He was instrumental in helping our Summer League as well as other on the field accomplishments. Go read his blog and Jim Parinella's blog and then vote, again. But then again I was his teammate so I am biased.
This process is akin to the pick up games that happen before the draft where "last back" or just a "wholesale" when your team gets scored on. Not a very sotg way to do things, but hey that is just pickup. This is different.

Skip, I too am curious why there would be as many as four votes against Ken's inclusion. My guess is that we are either dealing with people who don't know him or players who have been embarrassingly trounced by him on numerous occasions.

Skip (and others),
Let me address your comments in the order you made them:

"I would like to be considered on of the chosen few to get early admission privilege. I have participated every year of summer league."

A lot of people have participated in summer league for years, and this new policy is in no way designed to reward the number of years a person has been in the league. The policy is to reward those that give back to the league through volunteer service.

"I hope there will be transparency to the "special" people are who get this priviledge, as decided by the board."

The people that are able to register early are listed in the original policy, and they include:
-Current and previously elected board members
Current Advisor, which includes:
-All three division Coordinators (Coed, Open, and Rec)
-Webmaster
-Corporate Attorney
-Merchandise Coordinator
-Advisors listed on the WUDi website
-All captains from the past 3 summers (i.e. captains from all three divisions from WSL 2007, 2008, and 2009 get the early option for 2010)
-Volunteers who help WUDi plan and run events, such as clinics, hat tourneys, etc. (these people will be determined by the elected board members)

"Who voted for me, who did not?"

There is no voting, either you are one of the above listed people or not

"What is the criteria used to judge? How does this process work? Who gets to be judged? Are people nominated? Do we get to ask to be a part of this group? Are they just notified? How might these "special" people be treated by the board if there is an issue with them later? (oh they are special so they won't be in that situation). What happens the following year?"

This policy was set up to be as objective as possible. The individuals/groups of people listed above receive the ability to register early. For example, if a person was a captain of a team for any league in 2007, 2008 and/or 2009, then they are able to register early. We tried our best to keep this policy simple and show our thanks to those individuals who volunteer to help the league in these capacities.

My fault Ben.
I should have been more clear that I was specifically referring to the VOLUNTEERS at the bottom of that list of people who get the special grace period of registering 48hrs early. All my questions are directed to that group. Are not volunteers are already talking, emailing, phoning, letter writing constantly with the wudi board members about the clinics, events, and hat tournaments, and all the other important events of WUdi?
I understand "rewarding" those who help you guys, do your already difficult job, by granting early access to the coed division or the open division or even the rec division (unlikely). It might not be obvious to everyone who these people are who receive this honor? I would think that one is
Julie Sussman. She did a great job and must have worked tirelessly for the very successful hat tournament yesterday. Her assistant Fi Cheng, although less obvious, was also very helpful. The people who get the privilege should be identified to us regular folks. I am sure the board votes unanimous on each and everyone so why not just say "there was total agreement" or something like that. . . . I mean why not reward the people, who are helping to make the league fun, instructional, safe, guilt-free, with not having to register at 12:01 on April 1, so you can be assured they can continue to help you and the others. That is how the world works, if you help me I'll help you. I am sure it can not be more than a few people, at this time anyway.
Of course all board members and others who do important stuff for the league should be able to register early. My gosh, if for some reason they were shut out of coed and open and rec, how would the league function without their presence on the baked-hard fields playing in games during the spring and summer?

Skippy,

I think you voices some good concerns, probably thing that many are wondering.

perhaps volunteers is not a great word because it's not specific enough. the decision regarding who get's a pass isn't really that arbitrary and much of the reason we layed out the criteria is to avoid favoritism/cronyism. I'll give you an example. If Jude suddenly wanted to play WUDi again, he'd get a free pass. If there is anyone else who has run a tournament (e.g. Julie, whom we can't imagine this league without) or clinic for us, managed vendors, consistently (year on year, event after event) been on hand to help run an event, took care of disc and jersey sales, that person would probably get a nod. So when you think about it that way, there aren't actually that many folks and most of them are listed on the website as advisory board members.

if we made the criteria "people who make the league fun" the door to favoritism would be wide open and there would be way too many people who would potentially qualify. That defeats the purpose of removing the veteran status qualification.

If anyone is worried about this the best thing you can do is encourage more women to play Draft league. The more women we have the more teams, and therefore spots for men there will be.

All,

Based on all the feedback from the WUDI community, the Board has unanimously agreed to refine the Summer League registration policy as follows:

1) All vets will be allowed to register late (they show up late for games, why shouldn't we allow them to show up late for registration).

2) Registration will open up at 8am for the general public, but it will open up at 10am for the Billy O/ Church Mouse New Rock House (they'll be sleeping in anyway, so it really doesn't affect them).

3) Skippy will be allowed to both register for Summer League AND vote for Dobyns for the HoF in the same login session. However, if he registers late (see above), then his Dobyns vote will not count.

4) The registration will close once 120 men sign up (we're assuming this will be about 18 minutes after it opens). Then it will stay open through mid July so that Tucker can sign up once she's ready to play.

5) Sussman won't be allowed to sign up. Rather, she'll be able to play with any team she wants to, wherever she wants to, whenever she wants to. This is the "Sussman Rule", and is very different from the "Tapper Rule", which states that Tapper can turn off any radio, from any team, wherever he wants to, whenever he wants to.

6) Five Dollar Footlongs for anyone who registers early.

7) When you register, you'll be encouraged to select which captain you want to play with this Summer. For the 6 players that don't select Billy O, you will be playing savage with Pippen this Summer. (Or at least the second half of the Summer).

Happy Fools Day,

Faust
