Sad News in the Community - Update -

Dear Friends of Steven Horowitz & Wynne Wu,

It is with sorrow that we relay Wynne Wu's passing.  Memorial services are planned for May 2nd, in Brooklyn.  For more information about the services or how to offer help and support to the Horowitz family please keep reading.

Many of you know Steven Horowitz. He's been a fixture in the NYC ultimate community for more than a decade, and at this point, I think it would be difficult to find anyone in NYC who hasn't played on a team with him during the last 10 years. Steve has been a tireless organizer of teams, a cheerleader for the community, and can often be identified on the field by his signature furry blue Cookie Monster hat...As some of you may know, Steven's wife Wynne had been battling breast cancer for several years, and on Friday 23, 2010 she passed away.

Details of the memorial service are here:

Celebration of the Life of Wynne Wu

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 – 2pm

Congregation Beth Elohim Temple House 274 Garfield Place Between 8th
Avenue & Prospect Park West, Brooklyn, NY

Walk through Prospect Park in Wynne’s honor begins at the Grand Army
Plaza entrance
at 12:30 pm.

Informal potluck immediately following the Memorial Celebration. If you
would like to participate please bring a dish to pass consistent with
Wynne’s wishes excerpted below:

“I would like to have a non-religious memorial service filled with song,
poetry, good food and other artistic offerings…People should not wear
black, and it should be a celebration of life, rather than a day of
mourning. The food brought should be homemade, preferably a potluck! And
a favorite dish of each participant.”  -Wynne Wu, April 14, 2010

Steve has posted details on visiting him and the family (along with some
of Wynne's favorite songs) in recent days at the blog:

Additionally, Steven's friend Megan Yoo has established a fund to help Steven and Helen (Steve's & Wynne's four month old daughter) move on after Wynne's passing. As you can imagine, the past months of extensive treatments, hospital expenses, and 24 hour childcare (so Steven could be with Wynne at the hospital) have taken a financial toll on the family. Steven would be the last person to ask for financial assistance but giving to the fund would certainly help his family in the coming months. If you're interested, please see Megan Yoo's message below.

I know Steven appreciates all the support he is receiving -thanks to anyone who can lend a hand.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

A message from Megan Yoo

Many you have expressed a desire to help Steven and his family in some way. If you would like to contribute personally, I have created a fund at my non-profit to accept donations on Steven and Wynne's behalf. It is a registered 501c3 and eligible for company matching gifts if your employer provides this benefit. Your donation will also be tax deductible. 100% of the funds collected will be given to Steve at the end of the month, so your timely response is appreciated. You can donate via the link below.
